i shall explain.

formals are basically lyk 3 course meals where you sit down and dress up prettily and eat!

good food, usually..lyk the fancy stuff.

for instance for my matric. formal (yes i kept the menu..i was so nice!) we had :

starter : Warm trout, lime & coriander medallions with baby leaf & cherry tomato salad.

Main course : Char grilled supreme of chicken with roaster shallot & mushroom sauce

annd the BEST part..

desert! Italian tiramisu with blackcurrent coulis.

sounds deadly yummy doesn’t it?

yeah, the brits have this amazing talent of making everything sound super good.

but most formal meals are pretty good.

(they better be, for the 7pounds we are paying!)

ok, i’m blabbering.

so, yeah.

yesterday we went to this ubs dinner at newham, the other all-girls college.

ubs is essentially a investment banking company, and all other things that come along with.

was a pretty fun night.

it kinda made me more interest in IB, seeing that all i knew before was that you work crazy long hours, and get paid insanely well!

now, i know all the little-er sections.

and what interests me most is the investment banking department or human resources or asset management.

not trading.

goodness.

so damn stressful that one.

what more for indecisive ppl lyk me.

how do i know this?

well, last nite before the dinner we played a trading game, where we had to ‘buy’ and ’sell’ equities.

lyk you state your buying/sellling price and you trade with ppl in your group.

then throughout the game there will be news for you to determine if the stock will drop or increase in price.

so its pretty stressful cos everyone knows the same thing and are going for the same goal!

i was super stressed last night.

and it wasn’t evn REAL money.

but i did make profit!

first time was 14 points and second time 75.

nt bad riteee?

lol.

but, yeah.

i was so indecisive the whole game, lyk whether to sell or nt, so i dun think i can do trading, where its lyk do now or die.

thus, ibd, as they call it, long hrs but you invest in more long term things, so a deal would usually take a longer time, thus leaving you time to think and decide slowly.

or slow-er.

all in all it was interesting.

and talking to ppl actually involved in ib was cool too.

AND dinner, the formal part, was great.

soo yummy.

i think my table was lyk super diverse.

i was sitting with one doing chem. engineering, one doing law, two doing architecture, one doing arch and ant and there was me doing land economy.

preettty random bunch.

and the girl i sat nxt two was hermoine.

harry potter! hermoine!

haha.

she was really nice, and so super talented.

she showed me some pictures that she drew.

and …

OMG.

speechless.

that’s serious talent, wei.

but she told me she enjoyed drawing but couldn’t see herself being an architect…thus she wanted to do ib!

coolness.

and, hermoine does rowing..and is taking part in the GB trials!

and also, she eat lyk a LOT and looks lyk a model.

contrary to what most ppl think, seeing as how i ’seem’ to be rather free.

i jst finish my first ever uni assignment, an econs worksheet.

HOWEVER..

i still have a debate entitled ‘there is no natural environment in the uk’ to prepare for, one law worksheet to go through, one project abt structure/history/etc of cambridge, well, a certain area. my group is doing castle hill, the place where new hall is, and where cambridge practically started!

yes, i know loads abt cambridge history and abt the buildings/colleges and such. so if you ever want to come here, trust me i’d make a great tour guide =)

and also i can take you ‘biking’, smth traditionally cambridge.

seriously, there are so many bikes here its crazy.

every morning to get to lectures, i have to go thru traffic jam in form of bicycles.

and today when we did the traffic count for our project (looking lyk idiots standing by the road counting cars/bikes/ppl) i counted 3 times as many bicycles to cars.

madness.

oh and also gt to read up a billion law cases and some brit constitution thingy.

AND read thru accounts/econs/and the thick stack of photocopied pages abt cambridge architecture/history.

and also the book abt the environment stuff.

sometimes i wonder why i choose to torture myself lyk this.

we had to learn how to use this super swanky machine, that apparently is only for guys who want beefy/super buff arms.

and its in our all girls college gym why?

don’t ask.

anyways, its lyk you kneel on this platform, and the platform moves down with you+some weights.

then you gt to pull yourself, and the weight up.

goodness.

all of us were lyk struggling to get up.

and you cannot get off halfway cos apparently you can injure yourself pretty bad.

this machine is so blardy scary/dangerous that you are only allowed to do 10times or you risk breaking your neck/spine.

i’m NEVER going to use that machine.

beefy arms, a definate no-no.

i did it once, and the nxt morning my shoulders hurt.

ok, fine, mayb i am just weak.

supposed to be talking abt my weekend.

sat shopping.

then sunday went to chessington theme park (thus invoking questions on whether i came to cambs to study or for a holiday.lol) with the cumas (msian society).

supposed to be a fresher’s trip, but super few fresher’s mainly seniors.

but all in all it was pretty fun.

and i discover/decided, that i can’t do the whole free-fall, dropping thing, but can do fast turning rides.

gosh. i sat on the particular one where it was lyk a pendulum,and they swing you from side to side.

so you go super far up, and practically free fall to the ground.

over and over and over agn.

i thought i was going to faint.

so scary,man.

nvr doing that agn.

then there were two very scary looking rides that involve 360/180 turns respectivly.

obviously didn’t sit on those either.

crazy.

i enjoyed this one where your legs are lyk dangling to the ground, and the whole ride is jst lyk super super fast.

but no steep drops and all.

those are awful.

lyk your stomach is falling down, your brain feels lyk its going to die and your heart feels lyk its abt to pop out.

see, told you i lyk being dramatic.

also, there was this one ride where i gt super wet, so had to walk arnd half a day soaking wet.

can you say pnuemonia?

thankfully still not sick, and also haven’t caught the ‘fresher’s flu’!

yay, for my immune system!

so,yeah.

basically my whole weekend was doing stuff, fun stuff!

this week however, i’ve been doin wrk.

but still getting plenty of sleep.

you what’s bad abt me, once its abt 11-ish/12, my brain completely shuts down.

this is my collection of freebies i got from the banking and finance career thingy i went to just now with yanhong.

it was crazzzzy.

being true to my kiasu heritage (being msian, foochow and all.) i HAD to get everything in sight that was free!

so we went up to almost all the booths, and pretended to be interested in their company, altho we are only fresher’s and work is probly the last thing on our minds.

but, that paid off!

my final count was a pretty delliote notebook, 2 umbrellas (one from nomura and the other some random finance company), i tin of cocoa (random much?), 3 bars of chocolate, 1 mug from barclays, a billion pens, a deck of cards (yes, this finance companies give completely unrelated stuff!), 3 sticky notes thingy, 1 labling thing, 2 water bottles, 3 packs of mints, one highlighter from gic (i was still going up to them evn after they rejected me. pfft), and a gazzilion books abt finance and all the companies.

collecting all that was super fun.

lugging it back to college, now that’s a different story.

omg.

halfway up the hill back to new hall, i was starting to regret taking so many things.

i mean, i don’t need 2 umbrellas do i?

blame it on the chinese genes.

oh and i also gt a ipod speaker.

really stupid of me considering i don’t have an ipod.

alternatively i worry that due to my apparent lakc of work now, i’m just going to be lazy the whole yr round if i dun start studying now.

sometimes, i worry that i’m nt going to be able to cope with uni work.

other times, i worry that i’m nt making enough of an effort in ‘reading’ up things and spending too much, WAYYY too much time on the internet.

then i worry because i’m always sleepy.really don’t know why but i jst am.

and my biggest worry now, is abt my bank account. which is nt ready yt.

with no money i am so dead.

i’ve been having a lot of fun these few days, meeting new ppl, enjoying the new environment and all.

for instance, we had the msian society fresher’s squash today. and seeing soo many fellow msians, made me think abt msian food. so weird i know. which then made me think abt places selling msian food. which then lead to me thinking abt home.

well, i can’t say i miss home and i regret coming to uk, cos i really don’t. but still, home is where the heart is, and clearly my heart is still in kch.

pretty cool, cos almost all of us are singaporeans/malaysians.

which is funnn.

cos when u come to uk, all and any asian, esp s.e asian ppl become your best friends.

and i joined a few societies.

including a choir. cos i want to perform at least once.
